STCW Requirements and CoC Revalidation
Under the provisions of the STCW Convention (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), maintaining the validity of your CoC requires proven ongoing professional competence. For most maritime administrations, this translates to a mandatory minimum sea going service:
At least 12 months of approved seagoing service during the preceding 5 years, or
At least 3 months of approved seagoing service during the preceding 6 months prior to revalidating a certificate.
For upgrading a license (e.g., from Chief Mate to Master Mariner), the requirements are even more stringent, often demanding specific periods of watchkeeping or command experience. A miscalculation of even a few days can result in the rejection of your application by authorities such as the MCA, USCG, or other flag state registries.
How Sea Time is Calculated (The Maritime Standard)
Unlike standard calendar duration, maritime administrations generally follow a specific regulatory formula for converting total days into months and years. This calculator strictly adheres to this universal maritime standard:
Both the day of engagement (Sign-on) and the day of discharge (Sign-off) are counted as full days of sea service.
30 days are considered equal to 1 month.
12 months (or 360 days) are considered equal to 1 year.
