Unfortunately, fraud has become increasingly common in the maritime recruitment industry. Be aware of your rights and be vigilant:
No advance payments: No legitimate crewing agency or shipowner has the right to demand payment for registration, interviews, or guaranteed contracts.
Check the license: Before submitting documents, ensure the agency has a valid license to broker employment abroad.
Formal contract: All terms and conditions of employment, including wages and insurance, must be clearly stated in the contract before your departure.
International standard: According to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006), Regulation 1.4: "No fee or other charge for the recruitment and placement of seafarers shall be collected from a seafarer, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part." All hiring costs are borne solely by the shipowner.
