Online Helmsman Simulator: Bridge Steering & IMO SMCP Training

The NAVLIB Helmsman & Ship Steering Simulator is a specialized bridge watchkeeping training tool designed for deck cadets, Able Seafarers Deck (AB/OS), and Officer of the Watch (OOW) candidates. It provides mathematical hydrodynamic modelling of ship handling and reinforces strict compliance with STCW watchkeeping standards and IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP).

The simulator replicates standard navigation bridge instrumentation: a Gyro Repeater card (000–359), a Rudder Angle Indicator (Axiometer), a Rate of Turn (ROT) indicator, and a real-time hull kinematics display.

Core Features & Hydrodynamic Dynamics
  • Rotational Inertia & Steering Lag: Recreates realistic hull momentum where setting the helm to «Midships» does not immediately stop the swing. Effective counter-rudder checking («Meet her») is required to stabilize the vessel.

  • Complete IMO SMCP Sequence (12 Scenarios): Covers primary conning orders including course alterations («Steer 120», «Steer 060»), standard rudder angles («Port 10», «Starboard 15»), reducing helm («Ease to 5»), checking the swing («Meet her»), maintaining heading («Steady as she goes»), and emergency maneuvers («Hard-a-port», «Hard-a-starboard»).

  • Vessel Profiles & Sea States: Switchable hull dynamics for Handysize Bulk Carriers (35,000 DWT), Container Ships (90,000 DWT), and Coasters (4,500 DWT) with simulated wave yawing disturbances.

  • Watchkeeping Telemetry & RMSE Grading: Continuous measurement of Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), time on helm, and an integrated watch report export tool.

Closed-Loop Helm Command Protocol
  1. Acknowledge & Repeat: Repeat the conning order verbatim (press «REPEAT ORDER» or hit Enter / R).

  2. Execute Helm Order: Apply the commanded rudder angle using keyboard keys [A] / [D], step buttons, or the interactive rudder slider.

  3. Check the Swing («Meet her»): When approaching a new ordered course, apply counter-rudder 10–15 in advance to reduce the Rate of Turn before bringing the rudder midships.
